Canyon 2017 Lectures
Canyon Quilters of San Diego is San Diego’s premier quilting guild. We meet at The Shrine Center in Kearny Mesa (5440 Kearny Mesa Road) just north of Clairemont Mesa Blvd., behind the Hampton Inn, the third Monday of every month except December.
Doors open at 6:30, and we have plenty for members and guests to do before the program starts. There is a table for Membership, where you can pick up a member directory or a bookmark, chat with the membership chairs about what it means to be a Canyon member; there is a Philanthropy table where you can chat about how to help, and even pick up kits to start making quilts with; there is a Programs table where you can learn about upcoming events and workshops; there are tables to go to in order to participate in any of our current fun activities (Bag o’ Blocks or Fat Quarter Exchange); and there are tables to sign up for our retreat, or other ways to volunteer in community events.
The program begins at 7:00. There is sharing at almost all meetings, and either a special event or a lecture/ trunk show by a prominent quilter. Canyon is known for hiring the best teachers and speakers, and we take our reputation seriously. Here is a list of the 2017 speakers:
Spotlight on Canyon member, Charlotte Coomes, who has been making traditional quilts for many years. She is a precision piecer and serious quilter. Follow her story and look at the quilts she has produced during her journey.
Welcome Cindy Feagle, the mighty force behind many of the San Diego community quilt traditions. Cindy has been managing the quilting area of the Craft and Needle Arts program at the San Diego County Fair, and this year, has helped arrange for Canyon to volunteer with her crew. She will tell us stories from her past 20 years at the fair!

September 18 FRIENDS COME FREE
This is an inspirational and informative slide-show and lecture starting with Susan Carlson’s first fabric experiments of more than twenty years ago, in which she began to combine fabric and art. Susan shares techniques and hints for design, fabric selection, construction, borders, and quilting. To accompany the slide presentation, she displays a selection of quilts, allowing viewers to examine completed pieces and to see up-close how her techniques are applied. A question and answer period follows. Join us for this world renowned artist!
Cindy Needham will join us at the October meeting to talk about “For the Love of Linens.”
Cindy’s passion for quilting is turning ordinary antique linens into heirloom wholecloth quilts. Each quilt is a one-of-a-kind and they all have stories to tell. During her 60 minute trunk show she shares tips and techniques on how to create these amazing quilts, as well as share their stories and inspiration. The quilts love to be fondled before and after the program.
