Canyon's 2020 and 2021 Speakers and Workshops

Canyon Quilters of San Diego meet the third Monday of every month except December (we do not meet in December).

Check each month (below) for what time social hour starts, which is either 6:30 or 6:45pm. The evening program begins at 7pm.

There is sharing at almost all meetings, as well as a special event or a lecture/trunk show by the evening’s speaker.

2020 Schedule

August 17 Zoom Member Meeting
Philanthropy Program

Our annual Philanthropy program is led by Kris Hatch, who is sharing a pattern for the Veterans program. This is a fast but striking pattern that is effective in limited colors or scrappy. You choose based on what’s in your stash!

September 21 Zoom Member Meeting
Make & Take Program

  • 6:45pm social hour
  • 7pm program begins

Our annual Make & Take is a demonstration on English Paper Piecing (EPP), which is a technique using hand sewing to sew fabric pieces together into anything from a coaster to a tote bag to a pillow to a quilt! This demo is led by two Canyon members, Judy Thacker, aka judipatuti, and Susan Heinrich Wells.

EPP is very meditative when our life gets too stressful so be sure to join us on Zoom!

Get your EPP supply list and templates. Revised as of 08/22/2020 at 2pm.

Katsy Chappell

2021 Schedule

January 2021

February 2021
Sue Heinz
Program at 2/19 Meeting: You’ve Got A Friend Named Elmer. Sue shows you how to eliminate bias stretch, create curved INSIDE borders and sew pieced circles, all without the need for pins, clips or gadgets. A MUST-SEE lecture that will ROCK your piecing world!
Workshop 2/17-19: Free-Motion Quilting. A three-day workshop, with the third day an optional day for hands-on quilting. For more info on day 1 click here and day 2 click here. Held at TBD.

Workshop 3/20-21: Only One. Make a stunning, modern and artful quilt using a simplified stack-and-whack technique. The best fabric for this pattern needs to have a large repeat (ideally 22″ to 24″ but a 15″ repeat can also work), fairly large and varied print (a small print does not work), a good amount of negative space and a limited number of colors. For more info on this class click here. Held at TBD.

April 2021
Program at 04/19 Meeting: TBD
Studio Tour: 04/17 TBD

May 2021
Karen Brow
Program at 5/17 Meeting: TBD

Phyllis Cullen
Program at 6/21 Meeting: Quilting in Paradise. It’s all about how working in a studio overlooking the ocean, surrounded by tropical flora influences the art.

Workshop 6/19-20: Easy Stained Glass Quilts. Use any stained glass pattern (or one of Phyllis’) or create your own. Then make a quilted piece that not only looks like real stained glass but requires no fussy edge treatments, no bias tape, no fussy quilting and is quick, easy and fun! This class is appropriate for beginners, and a complete quilt can be completed in your two-day class. For more info on the class click here and scroll down to Easy stained glass quilts. Held at TBD.
